We Tried Glossier’s New Skywash Eyeshadows — & Here Are Our Unfiltered Opinions

In 2020, few things can get the people going quite like a shiny new Glossier launch. And while we can’t prove it, you’ll have to take our word for the fact that, in preparation for this story, the R29 offices were positively teeming with excitement surrounding Skywash, Glossier‘s new matte lid tints.

If Lidstar is for those with a soft spot for shimmer and shine, then Skywash is its sheer matte twin that has a New Yorker subscription and lives in Greenpoint. According to the brand, the seven shades take inspiration from the American Southwest, and range from Terra, a reddish brown, to Pool, a periwinkle shade that feels as fresh as a summer dip.

Other things to know about the eye product: The soft-matte liquid formula dries down to a powdery finish and rings in at $18 (or if you’re into bundles, you can shop two shades for $30).

Since we love nothing more than to enlist fellow R29 staffers for a little makeup testing, we corralled some of our colleagues to give us their unfiltered thoughts on Skywash. Read them all ahead.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. Skywash in Echo

“I’m not much of an eyeshadow girl, being that I’m normally no good at applying it, but I do like swiping on a bronzy shade to add color and depth to my lids. That’s what drew me to this shade. And while it took four layers to actually be seen, I fell in love with the subtle, smoky effect.” Thatiana Diaz, Senior Beauty Writer

“At first I thought this shadow was messy and never going to work, but after it dried, it was gorgeous and lasted all day, even as I cleaned, grocery shopped, and went to the park with my toddler. The brown hue was also perfect for my skin: It made me look done without being too done.” — Sade Strehlke, Wellness Director

Skywash in Palm

“It’s a beautiful shade and was easy to apply, but as you can tell by the photo, my skin tone is quite similar to the shade, so it’s a bit hard to see! I would also say that if you’re looking for an opaque finish, this is not the eyeshadow for you. It’s much better suited for those who like a slight tint on their eyes.” – Angelina Mei, Product Manager

“I love a natural-looking matte eyeshadow and Palm is perfect if you’re trying to achieve a no-makeup makeup look. However, this shade is very light and I don’t think there’s enough color payoff. If the shadows were more pigmented, they would look better on someone with darker skin, like myself. The dryness of the shadow makes the applicator a bit difficult to use, plus it caused some flaking, so I recommend priming your lids with a lightweight primer, which should help.” — Amani Richardson, Social Media Editor

Skywash in Lawn

“Of all the shades, I was most drawn to Lawn. It’s a perfect slimy green color that’s actually wearable, but still a statement. When it came to the actual application, I had a few minor issues. It went on seamlessly, but unfortunately dried a bit splotchy on my lids, then when I went to reapply, it just looked patchy rather than drying all together. I added some balm on my lids for hydration, which made it a little easier, so I’m pretty happy with my end results. I will definitely be getting my hands on the pink shade to wear as an everyday lid color.” Hannah Bullion, Associate Social Media Editor

“I don’t normally wear makeup, and if I do, it’s very subtle. However, this product is perfect for a fun pop of color to wear on a night out. At first I thought this was going to be an obnoxious neon green, but I quickly realized that Lawn has just the right amount of pigment to pop without it being too loud. Another aspect I truly enjoyed was the applicator, which is basically dummy-proof. I’ve never attempted to apply eyeshadow on myself, but thanks to the tip, it gave me the freedom to get creative! You can control how much of the product you use, especially if you want a light, subtle look.” — Victor Maldonado, Analyst

Skywash in Pebble

“I had to do three layers of this on my lids to notice anything, but overall, I think this is a good product for when you don’t want full glam, but still want to add a little pop to your eyes. Plus, it’s very easy to apply. I think I may try out other shades to see if there’s a color that packs more of a punch for my skin.” – Carly Danner, Video Intern

“I really love colored eyeshadow, so I gravitated towards this cool color, which looks refreshing in a time when some neon makeup isn’t actually safe for your eyes. I like that you don’t need extra tools to apply Skywash: Just put the product on your lids, dab with your finger, and voilà. I usually go for a more opaque color, so I did two layers closer to my lash line. Even though this is a pastel, it still makes an impact.”Maria Jiā Líng Pitt, Social Media and Marketing Manager, 29Rooms

“When it comes to shadow, I’m a sucker for creamy pastels that I can easily dab on for a light sheen, so I was game to try this formula in Pool. I first tried applying right from the wand, but prefer to use my fingertips to achieve the lightest tint (seen here). I even received a few compliments on its subtle blue sheen! All in all, I’d say it’s much more of a tint than a true shadow — which I prefer!” — Elizabeth Buxton, Associate Market Editor

Skywash in Terra

“I own a ton of cream eyeshadows — including Lidstar — and love them for quick, easy application. I was super intrigued to try a matte formula, and the shade Terra was insanely gorgeous upon swatching. Red can be a tricky color to pull off, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the result. The kiss of death for cream shadows is streaky, patchy coverage, and I was impressed by how well this shade covered my lid.” — Karina Hoshikawa, Beauty and Wellness Market Writer

“I’d never tried reddish eyeshadow before, but I often dab one of my Glossier Cloud Paints onto my eyes, so I gave this a try. My eyelids are naturally very dark, so I only wear sheer eyeshadows that work with them instead of against them. I applied a little bit along my lash line and found it was super easy to use. If you’re only looking for a quick wash of color, I’d highly recommend it.”Michelle Santiago Cortés, Lifestyle Editorial Assistant

Skywash in Valley

“I love this color! At first it felt a little weird putting the applicator on my eyes because it looks like a lip product, but once on, it felt silky smooth. Because of the way you blend it, by dabbing it with your fingers, it was a little tricky to get close to my lash line, since I’m used to the precision of an eyeshadow brush. It was really quick and easy though, so I could definitely see myself swiping it on every day when I don’t want to bother with anything else. Once on, it’s pretty subtle — I had add a few layers for this selfie. Overall, it makes me feel natural and glowy, so I like it!” Lily Fulop, Designer

“I’ll start by saying, I love the desert-inspired colors in this collection. Brushed across the big, round eyelids of the Glossier campaign models, the silky, matte shades of powder blue and golden beige are stunning. Though, on my small and crepe-y lids, this clay-orange stain packed a much weaker punch. But I’m into the natural subtly — it’s kind of like a little sunburn across my eyelids.” Megan Decker, Beauty Writer
