What comes to your mind when you hear the word caffeine? To most people it means coffee. However, caffeine is a stimulant which is not only found in coffee but also in tea and cocoa beans. Everybody loves anything with caffeine especially coffee .A hot cup of tea or coffee warms and calms you down that is why it’s the most widely used beverage in the world. Sometimes it’s classified as a drug because it’s very addictive, the more you drink it, the more you want. A reasonable amount of caffeine is okay, but excessive intake of caffeine can be very harmful to your body. 90% of people in the world consume at least one meal or beverage with caffeine in its daily.
According to research it’s safe for most healthy adults to consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day.
Below are the reasons why you should go slowly on that cup of coffee or tea:
Caffeine is very addictive. As I pointed out, caffeine is like a drug and can be very addictive if used for a prolonged time. And just like heroin or cocaine, it can make the use dependent on it such that it’s hard to concentrate on anything without taking it. Also, it has withdrawer symptoms such as a headache.
Caffeine and sleep. Caffeine can keep you from falling asleep. It does this by blocking the receptor known as adenosine that promotes sleep. It sounds like a good thing to some people especially those who work long hours or do nightshifts. However, lack of quality sleep for a long time can be very harmful to your health. Sleep deprivation can cause weak immune system, memory problems, and weight loss.
Facilitate Ulcers. Caffeine, when taken on an empty stomach, can irritate the linings of your intestines. Hydrochloric acid can be produced in large quantities. That can increase the risk of ulcers.
Blood pressure .Regular intake of caffeine can increase your blood pressure. It causes the increased production of adrenaline, which leads to high blood pressure.
Increase blood sugar. Approximately 29million people in the USA are diabetic. Caffeine is not good for people with diabetes type 2.despite the fact that there are theories of the caffeine reducing the risk of diabetes; it increases sugars in your blood.
Large quantities of caffeine can cause miscarriages. Pregnant mothers should keep their caffeine intake down 200 mg per day. Different reviews have shown that caffeine intake increases the probability of miscarriages. Women that consume more than 200 mg of caffeine daily has 25.5% rate of miscarriages. This is twice as those expectant mothers who don’t use caffeine which have a rate of (12.5%).
Caffeine may also affect the ability of a woman to conceive. Several types of research reveal that caffeine increases the time it takes to get pregnant.
As you have learnt, excessive use of caffeine despite how we love can have negative effects on your body, am not saying you quit it just use the recommended amount. Not more than 400 milligrams per day.
