Manchester United are reportedly furious after they believe they have been duped by Diego Godin’s agent.
It was no secret that United were desperate to sign a centre back as the summer transfer window started to creak shut – with Yerry Mina, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng all heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford – but none ended up joining.
On Deadline Day, Godin’s name joined the list – with a bargain £18million release clause luring the Red Devils towards the signing.
United were led to believe that Godin would be keen to sign a contract, United ready to offer a £7million-a-year deal, with the release clause meaning Atletico Madrid would no be able to prevent the transfer.

And the club’s head honchos, according to the Sun, think Godin’s agent is behind the failed swoop – with the Uruguayans representatives using United as leverage to get a fresh deal in the Spanish capital.
Hours later it is reported that Godin signed a new Atleti deal, at a lower than United’s offer £6.74m-a-year.
Earlier on deadline day, United boss Jose Mourinho admitted he might not sign anyone today.

“I am not confident,” he said. “I am not confident, and the market closes today, so it’s time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed.
“So I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to these first couple of matches – maybe three matches because after Spurs (and Burnley on August 27 and September 1 respectively) there is (a) national team (break) and a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare people better.
“I will focus on the players that are available, so I am not even thinking about that list of injured players I gave you, (Nemanja) Matic, (Antonio) Valencia and so on.
“I focus on just what we have, and we go with everything we have to the first match.”
