Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween Trailer #2 Brings on the Monsters

R.L. Stine’s Goosbumps monsters are unleashed on another unsuspecting town in the second trailer for the upcoming sequel, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.

As children of the 1990s known too well, Stine’s original Goosebumps books were extremely popular in their heyday. Stine’s initial wave of novels thereafter gave rise to multiple spinoff books, a Fox Kids TV series and Sony’s live-action film in 2015. Goosebumps the movie took in $150 million at the worldwide box office (against a $58 million budget) and earned the respect of most critics for its kid-friendly blend of supernatural horror and comedy. Even so, its followup endured something of an uphill climb before it finally started production earlier this year.

Haunted Halloween takes place in Wardenclyffe, a small town where R.L. Stine (Jack Black in the first movie) used to live. As it turns out, Stine left perhaps his most dangerous Goosebumps manuscript in his since-abandoned house there – as two young friends named Sonny (Jeremy Ray Taylor) and Sam (Caleel Harris) learn the hard way, after they open Stine’s enchanted manuscript and inadvertently unleash a whole lot of spooky creatures into our world. While Black was originally expected to return for Goosebumps 2, that ultimately ended up not happening after the sequel went through a series of writer, director and release date changes. The actor didn’t lend his voice to the evil Slappy the Dummy this time around either, with Avery Lee Jones (the villain’s puppeteer) filling in his former spot. Meanwhile, behind the camera, director Ari Sandel (The DUFF) called the shots from a script by fellow series newcomer Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit).

None of Black’s Goosebumps costars returned for Haunted Halloween, either. Instead, Taylor and Harris (the stars of IT and Castle Rock season 1, respectively) are joined here by a cast that includes Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Ken Jeong (Crazy Rich Asians) and Madison Iseman as the sequel’s female lead. In what appears to be a simple (but amusing) coincidence, the latter also “played” Black’s Professor Oberon video game character from last year’s Sony hit, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Based on the new trailer and the Haunted Halloween trailers before it, the Goosebumps sequel should amount to a harmless bit of kid-friendly fluff, no more or less. All the same, it does feel like Sony tried to make this movie on the cheap and failed to put too much thought into how best to evolve the Goosebumps films into something akin to an anthology (much like the books were – with exceptions). Still, here’s to hoping this sequel exceeds expectations and provides the juice box crowd with something fun to watch this Halloween season.
