Fans of Marvel Comics no doubt jumped for joy when news broke that Spider-Man would be finally joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), thanks to a new deal between Disney and Sony. As fans well know, the latter has owned the film rights to the webslinger for a long while and has made a total of five films based on the character. However, the relative failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 led Sony to seek a way to revitalize the character’s big-screen viability. And so Spider-Man: Homecoming was born.

Tom Holland will reprise the role for the film next year, following his induction into the MCU in Captain America: Civil War. We’ve already commented on which characters we’d like to see in the film and look forward to the impressive cast that director Jon Watts has assembled, including Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Tony Revolori, and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May.

However, while the film will mark the first in what is sure to be another ongoing franchise for Spider-Man, let’s speculate on all the ways in which the film will connect to what’s already been established in the MCU.
