If I had to pick one fashion motto to capture the current zeitgeist, it would be “less is more.” This certainly applies to the fashion industry’s growing awareness around sustainability and also to the “make-under” look that’s recently become popular. I took style cues from both when dressing for New York Fashion Week this season, leaning on neutrals and re-wearing some of my closet staples (see if you can spot the turtleneck I wore last season and basically every single week since then) and borrowing samples rather than buying new pieces that fit the “fashion week version” of myself but not my real life. I made sure to stay at my favorite NYC spot, Hotel Hugo, which is conveniently walking distance to many of the shows. It doesn’t hurt that it also has a special rooftop bar and extra-friendly staff that’s willing to navigate a flurry of NYFW deliveries and invites. When I couldn’t hoof it, BMW kindly provided transportation, as it partnered with IMG for this season’s NYFW. Scroll down to see the five outfits I wore for a week in New York. While still “photographable” with standout elements, they are decidedly more pared-back and neutral-focused than seasons past.
