iOS 11 Beta 5 has been released to the public a week early, and while many people are anxious to update, many others are wondering just what new features and fixes they’ll get. iOS 11 is one of the biggest changes to Apple’s mobile operating system in quite a while. Here’s a rundown to review before you decide whether you should take the plunge.
Airpods: For those using Airpods, you’ll notice a cool rotating animation when you open their case near a paired device. You’ll also see how much charge the Airpods and case have left, as reported by Forbes.
App Icons: When you look through your iPhone’s apps, you’ll notice some icons will look different. For instance, the Maps icon now features the new Apple “spaceship” headquarters, and the App Store icon loses the paintbrush and pencil. Icons in the Weather app will also be smaller.
Wallpapers: If anyone was even still using the live wallpapers with the fish, those are, well, going by the wayside with the new OS. Hopefully, this will make room for new live wallpapers in future OS versions.
Bug Fixes: Has your iPhone ever crashed when you’re deleting a voicemail? The new OS has a fix in place for this. It also fixes Call History bugs which were showing up in iOS 10. MacRumors.com reports the new OS fixes a bug where connecting to a cellular network after restarting wasn’t working correctly.
How to Take the Plunge: Chris Mills on BGR provides a handy list of devices compatible with iOS 11 beta. As Mills points out, even though it has moved from just developers to the general public since it is beta you still may encounter some app freezes, device crashes, and battery run downs associated with this new operating system.
