Jamie Carragher explains why Jose Mourinho's tenure at Manchester United could get even worse

Jamie Carragher has hinted Jose Mourinho is in line for the chop at Manchester United – with life about to get even more difficult for Portuguese boss.

Mourinho is under massive pressure at Old Trafford after overseeing United’s worst start to a season in 29 years – with Zinedine Zidane rumoured to be being lined up as his successor.

The Red Devils have lost to Watford , Tottenham and West Ham – who they lost 3-1 to at the weekend – in what Liverpool legend described as an “easy start”.

And Carragher admitted he fears for the former Real Madrid chief with a tough run of games, which includes title challengers Chelsea and Manchester City , coming up after the international break.

“It doesn’t bare thinking about for Mourinho and Manchester United if they were to lose to Valencia and Newcastle ,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “It could become terrible then. But I think they could win both of those games.

“United have had an easy start on paper. They have only played Spurs of the top teams at home.

“When they come back off the international break, they start with Chelsea and finish with Manchester City.

“That’s why you want Jose Mourinho at your club – to win big games.

“I think at the end of that run of fixtures, if they have defeats away at Chelsea and away at Manchester City, then I think it will be all too clear in what will happen going forward.

“Sometimes it can get that untenable, and there can be that much tension in the squad, that something has to happen.”

Mourinho hinted that some of his players do not care about United’s current predicament during his press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Valencia.

And Carragher agrees that it looks like certain players have “downed tools”.

“Unfortunately, and it sickens me to say it about players downing tools because I hate that, but it is always the manager who carries the can for that.

“And that is what Mourinho is paid big bucks for – to manage a squad. At this moment, he is not managing a squad.”
