Mojang, the studio behind the wildly successful sandbox game Minecraft, has announced a new game called Minecraft: Dungeons. The game will allow up to four players to go delving deep into an underground world that features many familiar features and creatures from Minecraft, but also a range of new mobs, boss battles, environments, and – of course – loot.
Minecraft was originally released in 2009 and has grown ever more detailed and complex since then, with regular updates adding elements like potions, pet ocelots and wolves, and villages full of strange, long-nosed people who communicate exclusively through humming. Since the very beginning, though, a core element of Minecraft has been the thrills of exploring underground caves, which are rich with ore but fraught with danger.
Announced at Minecon Earth 2018, Minecraft: Dungeons is an entirely new game built on the bones of the original. Mojang describes it as “an all-new action-adventure game inspired by classic dungeon crawlers, where you’ll constantly discover new weapons and items that will help you defeat a ruthless swarm of new-and-nasty mobs.” The player must go on a quest to save the villagers from the evil Arch-Illager, and can either go solo or team up with friends. Check out the announcement and trailer below.
Minecraft‘s popularity led to Microsoft acquiring Mojang for a staggering $2.5 billion in 2014, and in addition to the many updates since then, the franchise has also expanded. Recently-shuttered developer Telltale Games created an episodic Minecraft adventure called Minecraft: Story Mode, and a Minecraft movie is currently in development at Warner Bros. A new Minecraft game from Mojang is definitely worth getting excited about.
Minecraft: Dungeons wasn’t the only announcement at Minecon Earth 2018. Mojang also confirmed that the next Minecraft update, Village and Pillage, will release in 2019, and will include new villager designs and add another weapon to the player’s arsenal: the crossbow. The update will also add pandas to the game, and the pandas can give birth to baby pandas after eating bamboo. For those whose main passion in Minecraft is building, the Village and Pillage update will add scaffolding, which can be crafted using bamboo.
Thanks to its procedurally-generated worlds and the limitless scope of the imagination, you can never really run out of things to do in Minecraft. That being said, Minecraft: Dungeons looks like an exciting new twist on the original game, and we’re definitely eager to try it out for ourselves next year.
Minecraft: Dungeons will release on PC in 2019.
