The buildings in and around Tokyo shook for about a minute at 20:30 without causing significant damage. The earthquake with a magnitude of 8.5 occurred at a depth of 676 kilometers off the Ogasawara Islands south of Tokyo.

Subway traffic in the capital, as well as trains, had to be halted. Many were trapped in elevators or in the towers, without power. The Japanese have not departed from their calm, educated and accustomed as they are to earthquakes. Although experience is still impressive, especially for those that are high.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no risk of tsunamis. The Tokyo Electric Power Company said that no malfunctions have been reported at the site of Fukushima partly destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

New aftershocks are expected in the coming days. The jolt this Saturday succeeded the earthquake measuring 5.6 that shook the capital region on Monday, also without causing any damage or casualties.
