Hugh Hefner Dead: Here’s What Will Happen to the Playboy Mansion

Playboy Enterprises CEO Hugh Hefner has died at the age of 91. For decades, Hefner has lived in the famous Playboy Mansion, the site of notoriously lavish parties. So what’s going to happen to the Playboy Mansion now that Hefner has died? Who owns the property, and what do they plan to do with it?

Hugh Hefner and Playboy Enterprises actually sold Playboy Mansion last year to Daren Metropoulos, the co-owner of Hostess who had lived next door to the property since 2009. He bought the Playboy Mansion for $100 million, which made it the most expensive home ever sold in Los Angeles, according to CNN.

But at the time, it was agreed upon that Hefner and his wife, Crystal Harris, would live at the Playboy Mansion until Hefner died. Hefner was evidently paying Metropoulos $1 million per year in rent.

When Metropoulos made this purchase, it was reported that he wanted to restore the mansion and connect it to his own property next door, creating a 7.3-acre compound that he would use as his private residence, according to Variety.

“The heritage of this property transcends its celebrity, and to have the opportunity to serve as its steward would be a true privilege,” Metropoulos said in a statement at the time.

He also said that he feels “fortunate and privileged to now own a one-of-a-kind piece of history and art.”

It certainly sounds like the property is in need of some renovations, as The New York Times described much of it as “gross,” noting that the grotto pools “reminded me of one of those fetid animal enclosures at a low-rent marine exhibit.”

Darren Metropoulos is just 33 years old. He’s the son of billionaire businessman Dean Metropoulos and the co-owner of Hostess Brands.

Located in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, the Playboy Mansion is 21,987-square-feet and has seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a home theater, a gym, a tennis court, a grotto, a pool, a tennis court, a game room, and more. It was purchased for about $1.1 million in 1971 by Playboy Enterprises, according to the Los Angeles Times.
