That is precisely what the Korean giant has claimed. Just a week after Samsung came out with Galaxy A8, its thinnest tablet to date, the company has clubbed the ‘tech-gig’ with the Galaxy Tab S2. The tablet is purportedly Samsung’s thinnest tablet till date, even thinner than the thinnest iPad. While the iPad Air measures a meager 6.1 mm, both variants released under the Galaxy Tab S2 hood have sliced down device thickness to a minimum 5.6 mm.
Galaxy Tab S2: Two Variants, One Design
The design for both the tabs released by Samsung seems to be identical thus far, size and weight comprising the major differences. Just like the Galaxy Tab S released the previous year, the company has put most of the impetus on design and performance. Compared to the screen sizes, both variants are pretty light-weight at 265g and 389g respectively. With that combination of screen thickness and weight, the new tablets from Samsung have already shot up the expectations of techoholics.
On the ‘spectical’ zone of affairs, the device seems to have covered all bases. Here are a few quick snippets:
- Android 5.0 Lollipop
- Octa-Core CPU
- 8 / 9.7 inch Display
- 2048*1536 screen resolution
- 3GB RAM
- 8MP Rear / 2.1 MP Front Cameras
- 5870 / 4000 mAh Battery
- 32GB / 64GB Internal Memory
Ridiculous but True!
Some features on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 are really praiseworthy; others are ridiculously so. For one thing, Samsung is no mood to learn from (or even look at!) old mistakes. We are sure even a (blindfolded) tech aficionado would not guess right when given a tablet in each hand; such is the level of lookalike-awe that the new Samsung Tablet commands.
Now, come to the ridiculous aspects of it. The Tab S2 is 8% thinner than the already razor-like iPad Air 2. This is such kind of a thickness that makes the device look like a metal sheet when without a jacket. On a more serious note, place it in the hands of a child and it will drop nine (or more) times out of ten. Aside the super-thinner frame, the device is also a tad lighter than the iPad Air 2; which is at least 11 or 12 percent. It is funny how more money is fetching us less material as we near the judgment!
But most of the ‘lighter’ score that the Samsung tab scores over its Apple competitor is due to its all plastic back. While the Tab S2 has a mix of plastics and aluminum in the frame, the Air 2 is an all-aluminum child.
The copy-paste game doesn’t stop here. The Samsung tablet released last year had a ppi density of 280. In close resemblance to iPad Air 2, the Tab S2 has 2048 x 1536 resolution, melting down to 264 ppi!
From what the initial stats suggest, the Galaxy Tab S2 will ship in two major colors: white and black. The iPad Air 2 continues to be available in space gray, silver and gold colors.
While there is a neck to neck between Samsung and Apple over this round, a lot depends on the yet to be revealed prices of the new tabs by Samsung.
