Sergio Aguero can break Alan Shearer's Premier League goal record, according to Bernardo Silva

Sergio Aguero cemented his status as one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever strikers by adding another milestone to his stellar career.

With his majestic second-half strike, Aguero moved alongside Alan Shearer on 148 goals, on the list of most scored for one Premier League club.

Having extended his deal with City until 2021, Aguero has every chance of catching Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney, on 175 and 183 respectively, on that list.

Shearer’s overall Premier League goal record of 260 may ultimately be out of reach, but Aguero’s City team-mate Bernardo Silva is in no doubt the forward is up there with the greatest strikers to grace the English game.

“Sergio is the best scorer in Manchester City’s history,” said Silva.

“He’s a legend, not only for Manchester City, but also for the Premier League. If he’s not the best striker in the world then he’s one of the best.

“It’s great to have him with us. Every season he scores 30 goals or more. To have a player like him helps us so much.

“Everyone hopes he stays and if he reaches that level it will be even better, because everyone knows how important Alan Shearer was for English football and for the Premier League.

“I think he can reach it. He’s got the potential.

“Every season he keeps scoring more and more. We hope he can keep helping us win more titles.

“He’s been doing this for more than 10 years overall.

“You have to admire players like him, who score 30 goals and next season they don’t rest, they want to score 30 or 40 again.

“We have to be happy to have him and enjoy him.” Aguero’s goal was a thing of beauty, surging past three opponents from 40 yards out before exchanging passes with Raheem Sterling, who scored the first-half opener, and applying a clinical finish.

Guardiola’s side are away to Hoffenheim in the Champions League on Tuesday – when Aguero is likely to be rested –then face a huge test at title rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

City, who lost twice at Anfield last season, have not won there since 2003 and Silva admitted this week – having lost their Champions League opener at home to Lyon – is a huge one for the Blues.

“We’ve started the week well, now we have to try and come back from the first game we had in the Champions League,” said Silva.

“We want to start winning in the Champions League, then it’s Liverpool.

“Everyone knows how big and important that game is.

“So we want to finish this week in the best way, then go on to the international break with three points in each competition.”
