Sylvester Stallone Gives Uncertain Update On Rambo 5 [UPDATED]

UPDATE: Reports say Rambo 5 will begin filming in September 2018. The original article follows.

Sylvester Stallone has offered an uncertain update about the status of Rambo 5. While Rambo became an iconic action character following the massive success of Rambo: First Blood Part II, the poor reviews and disappointing box office of 1988’s Rambo III essentially retired the character for 20 years. Sylvester Stallone was also disappointed with how the third movie panned out, and following the success of Rocky Balboa in 2006, he decided to revive Rambo again and give him a proper send-off.

This resulted in 2008’s Rambo, which saw the retired soldier tasked with rescuing Christian missionaries in Burma. The movie’s relentless pace and extreme violence made it a big hit, but the ending seemed to hint it would be the character’s last adventure. A planned fifth movie has been in development hell for years, however, with one early concept featuring Rambo being tasked with hunting a feral monster created in a government experiment. Stallone said he’d retired the character following the announcement of a TV series he wouldn’t be involved with but he has since come back onboard for a storyline said to involve a rescue mission in Mexico.

It appears Rambo 5 might be in trouble again, with the star offering an uncertain update on the movie during an onstage interview at An Experience With Sylvester Stallone 2018. When asked about the project, Stallone had this to say: ‘We’re trying to come to terms on locations and things like that. Hopefully, it’ll work out, if not then there’s, you know, other things down the road’.

Rambo 5 is a project that’s hit plenty of bumps in the road, so while this update doesn’t mean the movie is in serious trouble, it does hint that Stallone isn’t willing to compromise on certain elements. Both Rambo 5 and Stallone’s other upcoming sequel The Expendables 4 are produced by Millennium Films, and the actor has had some creative disputes with this production company in the past. It was their decision to make The Expendables 3 PG-13 to appeal to a wider audience, a move Stallone later admitted was a mistake. The actor also briefly left the fourth movie over budget and location concerns before coming back.

Time will tell if Rambo 5 comes together, but in the meantime, Stallone has plenty of other franchises to keep him busy. He’s returning as Rocky in Creed II, where he’ll come face to face again with former rival Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and he’ll also be back for Escape Plan 3: Devil’s Station, where he’ll team with Dave Bautista for another jailbreak.
