Want a great job? Run a TV network — you’ll have more power than almost anyone else in the media business.
Want a really hard job? Run a TV network — you’ll be under constant assault from the forces that are remaking the media business, in real time.
Sounds like Kara Swisher and I should have some people who run TV networks onstage at the next Code Media conference, right? We agree: That’s why we’ve invited Peter Rice, who runs 21st Century Fox’s TV operations, and Nancy Dubuc, CEO of A+E Networks, to join us in Southern California on February 12 and 13.
You’re reading Recode, so you’ve got a sense of the challenges Rice and Dubuc are dealing with: Cord-cutting, advertiser pressure and a constant battle for viewers’ eyeballs — not just from other channels, but from Facebook, YouTube and every other digital challenger.
They’ll give us firsthand reports on the way they’re responding — while offering you insight about the way you should manage your business — live, onstage, in our signature red chair interviews.
Peter Rice runs almost every part of Fox’s TV empire — its broadcast channel, its studio operations and all of its cable channels (except for Fox News, which reports directly to Rupert Murdoch). And it looks like he’s working on plans to sell at least some of those assets directly to consumers, like HBO and CBS are already doing. Meanwhile, Disney has come calling …
Nancy Dubuc made a splash by championing the reality-show hits that vaulted A+E Networks up the ratings charts a few years ago. She’s still managing her core TV networks like A&E and Lifetime, but she’s also experimenting aggressively with new brands and digital tests: Last year, Dubuc converted one of her networks into Vice’s Viceland channel, and it looks like she’s having success finding new audiences on Snapchat and Facebook.
They’ll be joining an impressive list of speakers that we’ll be telling you about for the rest of this year. And we’ll be meeting at a pretty excellent place to spend two days in February — the luxurious Paséa Hotel and Spa, right next to the Pacific Ocean. Register now for our First Mover discount, and we’ll see you there.
