As our friends in the UK declared last month, the retro Mary Jane is set to be 2020’s star shoe silhouette. The charming style has been around forever but has ventured in and out of the footwear spotlight in recent years. But as designers from Carolina Herrera to Marc Jacobs showcased in the S/S 20 collections, Mary Janes are making a comeback in eclectic colors and forward shapes this year.
TBH, if Carrie Bradshaw wasn’t fictional and was around today, we bet she’d covet the fresh Mary Janes hitting the scene. After all, she did gravitate towards the Manolo Blahnik Campari Mary Janes (which she described as an “urban shoe myth”) during season four of Sex and the City. On that fictional television note, another style icon, Blair Waldorf, also often wore the sophisticated shoe trend throughout Gossip Girl. Well, the fashion girls of today—my stylish mom included, who loves MJs for their classic nature—will undoubtedly stock up on the new-wave MJs as well as a simple way to bring forward polish to an ensemble.
To break down the trend a bit further, we rounded up a few images of Bradshaw and Waldorf wearing the shoe style to showcase the trend from the early and mid-2000s, along with how the 2020 MJs look on the runway and on the street. Oh, we also shopped out a range of cool silhouettes in case you want to scoop up a pair of this must-try shoe trend before everyone else does.
