Why you should read a book

It is 9 p.m and I am seated in my usual spot in my apartment as the wind blows in to the room through a side balcony window. In my hand is Helen Fielding’s book Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination, a book I started reading a few days ago. There’s nothing as exciting as flipping through the pages and being taken through an adventurous ride across the world. First, I started out in London, and then moved to Key Largo and currently in Honduras. I do not know where I am headed next, but I am ready for a flight. My life has been defined by fun, not for the many times I hang out with friends, but for the many books I do read. While there are many fun things to do, I consider reading as my number one priority. It is adventurous and it awakens the emotional creature within to shape the character of an individual. Here’s my package as to why should develop a reading culture.

Reading stimulates the mind. The brain is like a machine that needs power to smoothly run. Engaging it in every day reading helps it to remain strong and healthy. While this can be done by playing games such as chess, football and others, reading creates an imaginative and cognitive mind important for personal growth.

Reading develops analytical skills. This is one of the most important benefits of reading. The booked that you engage in has a particular content structure which needs analysis before diving into reading it. Looking at the structures and understanding why book has been structured the way it is helps you learn how to quickly structure things and in a logical way. This is very important in both your everyday professional and personal life.

Reading mentors and inspires. Reading biographies, memoirs and other books describing lives of individuals is a great inspiration. Through such books, you get to learn their struggles, motivation and how they streamlined their lives into a success. By getting to know their personal lives, your own lifestyle can be influenced positively.

Reading enhances literacy. There is nothing as important as the ability to communicate very strongly either through written or verbal means in the present corporate world. Through these skills, having good communication abilities help build strong relationships with people of different ages and social classes.

Reading increases the ability to concentrate. Concentration is something that is developed. In the same way jogging or listening to music is a form of mediation, reading is one. There are so many distractions in the present world and to get over it, reading a book allows you to develop the required concentration to complete tasks within a provided timeline despite the existence of distractions.

Reading helps you to understand yourself better. Reading is a great deal to know your pros and cons. Through it, you can reflect on the life experiences of persons in books and look at your own while evaluating what you do like and what you do not. You also get to know what you can try in life. It opens new perspectives that can shape your personality into a finer person.
